ROUND 4 v NEWLYN

FOOTBALL

We travelled to Newlyn this week for a great sunny days Football and Netball. We have had a couple of wet and cold days there in past years so it was a pleasure to see the great weather and good ground to play on.

The Under 12s are continuing to play well together and are undefeated after 4 rounds. The coaching team led by James Draffin continues to work to improve skills and teamwork to help our young team improve. Final scores Skipton 7.4-46 to Newlyn 0.1-1. Awards went to Will Sheehan for the Pinky’s voucher and the Skipcoin to Lachie Gardner.

The Under 15s continue to work on their teamwork and bringing all players into the game. Coach Kelvin Scott is very keen to develop the younger players as well as the more senior guys and thinks there is good progress in this area. He is aware that you need a whole team playing well when they are challenged by better sides in the games to come and is trying to prepare the side accordingly. A highlight was to see one of the younger players in Marty Boyer kick the first 7 goals of the game. He kicked 11 for the game and well as setting others up as well. Skipton 18.9-117 to 0.1-1 Awards, Pinky’s Jesse Kennedy and Skipcoin Jack Shady.

The Under 18s again struggled for numbers, coach Chris Jones has worked extremely hard over the last couple of months to put a side on the ground and needs a few more players to top up the side. Chris is doing a fantastic job with the resources he has, and the list he has is a talented one, just a bit light on for numbers. Four or five extra players would give a quality coach a quality side to work with. Please give any potential players names to the club so we can help Chris out. With a score that didn’t reflect the effort of our boys Skipton were defeated 3.1-19 to 13.18-96. Awards, Pinky’s Jack Sheehan and Skipcoin Matt Plover. Emu Creek Deli voucher Cree Stranks.

The reserves found the going a little tough with several players called up to the senior side. They battled away hard all day but the final score was not particularly complimentary Skipton 1.1-7 to Newlyn 20.12-132. Skipcoin vouchers went to Rick Henrickson and Josh Sandlant.

The senior game was a difficult one at times, with injuries causing a second term lapse that was difficult to watch, but then a revival in the last half when some very good passages of play were on display despite being two players down. Skipton matched Newlyn after half time and showed character and polish to play the game out. It is not a simple thing to build a side from virtually scratch, but those watching on would take away the thought that it is coming together, with a list that has plenty of upside for the future. Skipton 8.7-55 to Newlyn 20.12-132.

NETBALL

A grade went in a little undermanned this week with injured goalie Erin Gillespie out of action. We saw Paige Follett step up from the under 15s to take the court though in her first senior game. Unfortunately Newlyn were desperate to get a win on the board and were too strong for our girls going down 24 to 53. Awards went to Amelia pollock, Ella McLean and Laura Fay.

B grade started our game knowing that we were up against a very tall and experienced team of Newlyn. At first quarter time we were down by 11 goals but by three quarter time we had shorten their lead to 2 goals. Unfortunately they overtook us in the end and the final score was 35-23. Awards went to Hannah Smyth, Amy Dridan and Gemma Molloy. C Grade Newlyn came out strong in the first quarter and took our girls by surprise. By half time we found our emu spirit, which saw some great shooting by our shooters Ella Dridan and Anna Walker, who received the awards. The final score being 43 to 22, the coach’s award went to Lily Bingham. The under 17s were up against it this week and went down 3 to 31. Awards to Annie Elliot and Vivian Johnson knight.

Our under 15s also had a tough match and were beaten 9 to 26 by a fast opposition. Awards to Paige Kennedy and Sophie Cook.

It was a lot closer for our under 13a girls who managed to get within 2 at the final siren losing 17 to 19. Awards to Alice Liston and Silver Victorsen.

We did start the day well though with a great win to the 13b girls 14 to 0. Great game with awards to Hannah Meek and Lyla Molloy.

We also fielded a 13c team this week giving our grade 3 and 4 girls their first real taste of netball. They did incredibly well and took an unofficial win 7 to 5. Great team effort.
